Unpivot data: columns to rows
Turn a wide table with one column per month or product into a long table a pivot table can use.
How it works
Your file is opened in an isolated sandbox with no internet access, processed, and the sandbox is destroyed. Nothing is stored, and no account is needed.
It uses the same reader as the full product, which is built for the spreadsheets people actually have: headers that are not on row 1, merged cells, totals rows pasted at the bottom, dates in two formats, and numbers stored as text. Everything it changes is listed back to you.
Common questions
What does unpivot mean?
It turns columns into rows. A table with Product, Jan, Feb, Mar becomes Product, Period, Value — one row per product per month — which is the shape pivot tables, charts and databases expect.
Which columns are unpivoted?
The columns of numbers. Text and date columns, like Product or Region, are kept on every row as labels. When the column headers are months or dates, the new column is called Period.
Do I need Power Query?
No. Power Query's Unpivot Columns does the same thing inside Excel; this does it from the file, with nothing to install.
What happens to empty cells?
They are left out of the result, so a month with no value does not become a row with a blank.
