Stripe Fees Report: Monthly Fees From Your Export

A Stripe fees report shows how much Stripe kept from your payments each month. The Balance report in the Dashboard summarises it; the balance transactions export has the fee on every line, so you can split it by product, customer or type.

Upload the balance transactions export and ask "Stripe fees by month as a percentage of charges" — refunds and disputes shown separately.

In the Stripe Dashboard

Reports → Balance shows activity for a period with fees as their own line. Set the month and download the summary. It answers "how much in fees last month"; it does not show which products or customers the fees came from.

From the balance transactions export

Reports → Balance → Balance change from activity → Download, choosing the itemized version, or Balance → All activity → Export. Each row has gross, fee and net, and reporting_category says whether it was a charge, refund, dispute or fee. In Excel, group fee by the month of created_utc and by reporting_category.

Fees as a share of charges

Divide the month's total fee by the gross of charges only. Including refunds and payouts in the denominator makes the percentage look lower than what you pay.

What usually goes wrong with it

  • Categories mixed together

Charges, refunds, disputes and Stripe's own fees share one export, so a plain SUM of gross is not sales.

DataMimi It reads a Stripe balance export by its headers and uses net for revenue, gross and fee for the fee rate, and reporting_category to separate charges from refunds and disputes.

  • Timestamps in UTC

created_utc puts late-evening US payments into the next day, and the last day of a month into the next month.

DataMimi It says the timestamps are UTC and which month boundary it used.

  • Dispute fees look like sales costs

Dispute fees appear as their own rows and inflate the processing-fee percentage if not separated.

DataMimi It lists dispute and refund amounts on their own lines next to processing fees.

  • Several currencies

An account taking payments in more than one currency lists each in its own currency column.

DataMimi It groups by currency before totalling.

Common questions

How do I see my Stripe fees?

Reports → Balance in the Stripe Dashboard shows fees for a period; the itemized balance export has the fee on every transaction.

How do I download a Stripe fees report?

Download Balance change from activity (itemized) or export All activity from Balance; total the fee column by month.

Why is my Stripe fee percentage higher than expected?

Disputes, international cards and currency conversion add fees. Separate them by reporting_category to see where it comes from.

Is there a Stripe payment fees report by product?

Not directly. Use the description or metadata columns of the itemized export and group fees by them.

Are Stripe fees refunded when I refund a payment?

Usually not; the refund row shows it. Check the fee column on refund rows in your export.

Try it with your own file

DataMimi reads the file you actually have — merged cells, headers below row one, totals pasted at the bottom — and shows which rows and columns every number came from.
