Can You Export Bank Statements from Xero? Yes, to Excel
Can you export bank statements from Xero? Yes: the raw statement lines come out as CSV, and the coded Account Transactions report comes out as Excel. Which one you need depends on whether you want what the bank shows or how it was booked.
Get your Xero bank transactions into Excel in two minutes, then ask questions of them without building a pivot table.
Export bank statement lines to CSV
In Xero, go to Accounting → Bank accounts, open the account, then Manage Account → Bank Statements. Set the date range and use Export to download the statement lines as a CSV file, which opens directly in Excel. This is the raw feed from the bank: every line, reconciled or not.
Export coded transactions to Excel
For transactions already reconciled and coded, go to Accounting → Reports → Account Transactions. Choose the bank account and the period, press Update, then Export → Excel. This version carries the account codes, contacts and tax rates that the statement CSV does not.
Export only unreconciled transactions
Use the statement-line export for these. Unreconciled items are not in the Account Transactions report yet because they have not been coded, so the Bank Statements view — filtered to unreconciled before exporting — is where they appear.
Which export to use
The statement-line CSV shows what the bank recorded; the Account Transactions export shows how it was booked. Comparing the two is how most reconciliation gaps are found.

What usually goes wrong with it
Two exports that do not match
The statement CSV and the Account Transactions report cover the same money but differ in rows, signs and columns, so totals rarely agree at first glance.
DataMimi It reads both exports and lines them up by date and amount, then lists the lines that appear in one and not the other.
Unreconciled lines are missing from reports
Anything not yet reconciled is absent from Account Transactions, which makes a month look smaller than the bank says it was.
DataMimi It says which period and which rows each total came from, so a gap from unreconciled lines is visible instead of hidden.
Money in and out in one column
The statement export puts deposits and payments in a single signed amount column, so summing it gives net movement, not totals in and out.
DataMimi It splits the signed amount into money in and money out before totalling, and says it did.
Payee names written a dozen ways
The same supplier appears under several bank descriptions, which splits it across rows when you group by payee.
DataMimi It groups near-identical payee descriptions and shows you the grouping before using it.
Common questions
Can you export bank statements from Xero?
Yes. Open the bank account, go to Manage Account → Bank Statements, choose the dates and export the statement lines as CSV.
How do I export bank transactions from Xero to Excel?
Run Accounting → Reports → Account Transactions for the bank account and period, then Export → Excel. The statement-line CSV also opens in Excel.
How do I export unreconciled transactions in Xero?
Export from the Bank Statements view with the status set to unreconciled. They are not in Account Transactions until they are reconciled and coded.
Why don't my Xero export totals match the bank?
Usually unreconciled lines, a different date range, or deposits and payments netted in one signed column. Check those three before anything else.
Is there a limit on how much Xero will export at once?
Long periods can be slow; exporting a quarter or a year at a time keeps the file manageable and easy to check.
Try it with your own file
DataMimi reads the file you actually have — merged cells, headers below row one, totals pasted at the bottom — and shows which rows and columns every number came from.
